There is nothing more disconcerting for the American People than the knowledge of captured serviceman being abused or tortured by the assorted enemies of the US in Iraq. That is why the latest episode involving the three missing US soldiers is sure to capture the collective anguish of the American people. POW s is the last thing that president Bush needs now in trying to convince the American public about the justification of the war in Iraq. The thought of torture of these serviceman by Iraqi insurgents is enough to hasten the exit of the US from Iraq. Photos of the serviceman have not surfaced as of yet giving hope that they can somehow be found unharmed. This nevertheless seems unlikely as time goes by without any clues to there whereabouts. The US seems in the middle of another Vietnam style quick sand. It seems unclear how and when they will be able to extricate itself. Many in the Arab world will see an American pullout as a victory over the west by fundamentalist Islam, this will have severe repercussions for the free world. On the other hand the violence does not seem to be abating. To make matters worse The looming showdown with Iran may be straining the resolve of the west to deal with rogue Islamic regimes that are threatening world stability.American foreign policy in the region has become a mess. |
