Former Prime Minister Sharon's son to start Jail term

A day after bedridden Sharon turned 80 years old his son Omri will go to jail for fraud and election related corruption. He will serve for serve for 7 months. His somewhat dramatic jail term is the riches to rags story of Israel. For those who do not remember Ariel Sharon was Israel’s prime minister till about 2 years ago when a debilitating stroke left him comatose. His son Omri was his chief  adviser on almost everything and the head of his election team. He was convicted of setting up straw companies that illegally funneled money to fund his fathers campaign. Omri Sharon was also a member of the Israeli parliament up until his indictment on the charges he was eventually convicted. He was instrumental in the decision making process that led his father to unilaterally pullout from the Gaza strip. This very controversial move  displaced 8,000 Israelis and eventually led to the takeover of Gaza by the Hamas . The younger Sharon was apparently pushing his father to make this decision. The ramifications on the ground have made that decision look bad if not disastrous.

It is not a common occurrence to see a parliament member and former top adviser to serve jail time. Omri had made many enemies while wielding so much power in Israeli government circles, those will not shed any tears on Sharon’s incarceration. They in fact think Sharon deserves to be in Jail.

So do the courts
