Olmert awaits Winograd commissions finding on Second Lebanon War The Prime minister of Israel is awaiting the final recommendations of a government appointed commission on the second Lebanon war. Israel is widely of seen as faltering in this war and Olmert is widely seen responsible for the fiasco of the military. In any case many are anxiously waiting to see if the commission directly implicates Olmert if that happens continuing would be very difficult. Both left and right wing parties are demanding Olmert's resignation if the commission's findings are the expected ones. Olmert for his part is saying in a very clear way he will not resign no matter what the findings are. He may not have a choice as the labor party, Olmerts biggest coalition partner has promised to bolt the government when the finding becomes public. Labors leader defense minister Ahud Barack has tried to distance himself from Labors official stance but it remains to be seen if Barak can go against his party and not bolt now from the government. That isn't Olmerts only worry as current peace talks seem to be leading nowhere and Hamas is threatening to breach the Israeli side of their mutual border in the same way it breached the Egyptian side. If Olmert resigns there may be new elections or he may be replaced by the foreign minister Livni. Never a dull moment in Israeli politics. |
