Terrorists hit southern Israeli city of Ashkelon with Rocket. In a clear escalation of violent activity emanating from the Gaza strip a rocket has hit the deepest into Israel since this cycle of violence began. The Israeli military has expressed grave concern that attacks like these were likely as huge amounts of military hardware have been smuggled into the Gaza strip. The Katusha style rocket hit North Ashkeleon in a residential area but caused no damage or injuries. Nonetheless the mayor of the city Rony Mahatzri has said that now his entire city is within rocket range and the Israeli government and army must take action. The time of the attack could not have come at a worse time for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. He is preparing for a visit from President George Bush as the peace talks stemming from the Annapolis summit seem to be stalemated. Olmert also understands that his ability to offer concessions in negotiations will be greatly hindered if attacks of this kind continue. His popularity in the public is very low and Benjamin Netanyahu the head of the opposition will only gain popularity as he attacks the inability of Olmert to stop attacks of this kind. The Hamas for its part would like to embarrass Olmert and Bush as much as possible. The mess is the Gaza strip seems to be expanding daily. The Israeli Army may need to intervene very soon. It won’t be pretty |
