Wikipedia likely to lose sleep over Googles challenge to its supremacy
Knol, Googles challenge to Wikipedia
The giant search company Google has launched Knol a direct attempt to challenge wiki pedias dominance in the information field. Very often Wikipedia entries are the first or second in Google searches. This may provide a loss of revenue for Google as users will click on the wiki site and leave the google search page. If Knol competes successfully with Wikipedia then users looking for direct info on various subjects will choose Knol and stay in Google and continue to use its lucrative advertising features.
Wikipedias popularity has brought with it much criticism. The most critical point stemming from the anonymous nature of the uploads at Wikipedia. Google would claim as others do that there is little accountability on Wikipedia as no one really knows where the info is coming from. Knol is seeking to change this by having the authors name and picture in a clear place on the article. The knol team has said that conflicting articles are likely but stress that this will just improve the overall knoll experience. "Competition is a good thing "the head of the project was quoted as saying. In any case many breathless await the implementation of " Knol " that looks to change the way reliable information is taken from the internet. Google is in the preliminary beta phase that has invited selected people to participate. In an ironic twist the first test page was on "insomnia ".
Makes you wonder if Google is thinking that Wikipedia might lose some sleep over " Knol ". It probably will.
