Unclear outcome and purpose of summit makes Annapolis summit a know show for news.
Annapolis summit disregarded by US media giants. The upcoming Annapolis conference doesn’t seem to be interesting to any of the major Media giants. CNN Fox news or any other of the well known syndicated news services is not placing much importance on the very high profile Annapolis summit that is to happen this week. Some analysts have pointed out that some ongoing stories like the upcoming Iowa caucus and New Hampshire primary are far more interesting to the American public. Those stories along with the Iraqi security situation just seem more interesting than another Middle East summit. There have been about eight such summits in the last 30 years with the last 5 yielding much more damage than benefit. These news services see no real breakthrough likely or possible and are covering the event and participants accordingly. There is one event at the conference that may gain some more intense scrutiny from the press. That would be President Bush’s keynote address to open the conference. There has been much speculation as to the content of this address. Many analysts are assuming that Bush will practically promise real progress that will lead to a Palestinian state or at the very least an agreement on one before he leaves office. He need not worry about many of his core supporters in the Republican Party that are against any such conference that will force Israel to cede any territory. He may be trying to placate some Arab countries ahead of a strike in Iran, we will know if that is true in time. The summit will provide some great photo ops for some embattled leaders. Whether it will ease or alleviate the threat of conflict remains to be seen. The odds of that happening are not high. |
