Jose Ernesto Medellin has been sentenced to die. The question is will it happen.
Should he die? Jose Ernesto Medellin and five other gang members raped and tortured to death Jennifer Lee Ertman, 14, and Elizabeth Pena, 16 on June 24 1993 in Houston Texas. Jose Ernesto Medellin has been sentenced to die for those heinous murders and the former governor of Texas President Bush is opposed. It’s hard to think of a more brutal violent outburst on two defenseless girls that summer night. It is beyond human capability to fathom the agony of those two girls in the last moments of their lives. Most experts agree that the death penalty is not a deterrent in the statistical sense. This case and its death sentence are about something else. Justice. They do not deserve to live as they have forfeited that right with the horrible crime they committed. Three of the youths were under eighteen when the crime was committed and will not be executed. Derrick Sean O'Brien was executed for the murders apologizing profusely to family witnesses as the lethal drugs began to flow. Jose Ernesto Medellin is Mexican and may win a reprieve because of an international law that says that they should have been allowed assistance from the Mexican Consulate before trial. Peter Cantu another member of the Gang has not been executed as of yet. It has been reported that one of the girls could have escaped but chose to try to help her doomed friend. This act of ultimate evil needs to be addressed. If the State of Texas has its way it will be. |
