Arab league members to Israel to push peace plan

Peace imitative?

In what some see as a historic move members of the Arab league have officially come to Israel to try to push forward a peace deal. This indeed is historic as the Arab league has traditionally shunned all contact with Israel on any level.

Some local analysts have commented that the Arab league probably is guessing that Olmerts days as prime minister are numbered and Benjamin Netanyahu will be the next prime minister. This being the case they are desperately trying to begin some sort of process that demands extreme concessions from Israel.

The process is doomed from go however for a number of cardinal reasons. Here are some of them.

The underlying condition for any agreement is complete withdrawal from land captured in the 1967 six –day war. A majority of Israelis are against any withdrawal after the last withdrawal brought with it war in the north and south of Israel. An overwhelming majority are extremely opposed to any pullback in Jerusalem which would be a major part of any deal with the Palestinians.

In simple terms the maximilist concessions that Israel is capable of making is less than the minimalist demands that the members of the Arab league will come with. The last time all this type of negotiation was attempted when Ahud Barack was prime minister it resulted in the first intifada when negotiations broke down.

It is also unclear in whose name Machmoud Abbas or the Arab leaguye will negotiate. The rival Palestinian group Hamas is clearly more popular than Fatch Abbas’s party .

The Hamas have been completely marginalized even though they won free Elections by a landslide  over a year ago..

There is really nothing to negotiate on and no one to negotiate with.

Sounds crazy?  Not in the middle east.
